PETALING JAYA - One of the major factors working against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as he faces the biggest challenge in his political career is former premier Mahathir Mohamad’s record of winning every major political battle he has engaged in.
Shahbudin Husin points this out in his latest blog entry as he joins many other commentators in predicting Najib’s defeat. He says it is undeniable that Mahathir is becoming more and more aggressive in his attacks and is determined to end Najib’s tenure as Prime Minister as soon as possible.
He says the former prime minister has made it obvious in his recent remarks that nothing will make him back down. “Is Najib strong enough to face this challenge? Or will he eventually fall like all the other political enemies that Mahathir has fought against?” Shahbudin says many observers believe that Mahathir’s demeanour shows that he has yet to play the trump card that will force Najib to quit.
“According to many Umno leaders, Mahathir would not engage in battle if he wasn’t sure of winning.” Another major threat to Najib, Shahbudin says, is the tendency of Umno warlords to go where the wind blows. “Many are now waiting for the battle to develop to the point where it becomes quite clear who the victor will be,” he says.
“If Najib triumphs, he will be hailed as the one person who has been able to stand up to the former prime minister. If he is defeated, his name will be added to a list that already has on it the names of Musa Hitam, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Anwar Ibrahim and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.” - FMT
