PAS today slammed Attorney-General (A-G) Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali over his inaction against controversial 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), saying that he was not as sensitive as the Malay Rulers who had asked the scandal to be investigated swiftly.
The party's deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the Finance Ministry-owned 1MDB and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak were still "standing strong" because Apandi could not "smell" any problems with the company.
"With many whose fates have been changed because of 1MDB, however, 1MDB and Najib still stands strong because the A-G cannot smell any problems with 1MDB," he said in a statement today, referring to Najib's post as chairman of 1MDB's advisory board.
"It is clear that the Attorney-General's nose is not as sensitive as the nose of the Malay Rulers who are also urging for the 1MDB crisis to be resolved quickly."
Last week, the Conference of Rulers listed nine points regarding 1MDB, including a call for transparency in investigations and for wrongdoers to be punished.
The Malay rulers, who as sultans are ceremonial heads of their respective states and guardians of Islam, said they wanted the government to complete the investigation into 1MDB as soon as possible and act against those found to be implicated.
Tuan Ibrahim said those whose lives had changed includes that of former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, who were sacked from Cabinet after publicly criticising Najib and 1MDB.
He noted that even the former A-G Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail was removed from his post and replaced with Apandi, during the investigation into 1MDB by the special task force headed by the former.
The special task force consisted of the A-G's Chambers, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Bank Negara Malaysia and also the Royal Malaysian Police.
"No only that, there was also the strange transfers of the deputy director of Bukit Aman's special branch Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador and MACC investigating officers to the Prime Minister's Department, the appointment appointing four members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to the Cabinet, the sacking of law officer Jessica Gurmeet Kaur and the dissolution of the 1MDB special task force," Tuan Ibrahim said.
"The matter did not stop there. Now 1MDB critics Datuk Khairuddin Abu Hassan and Matthias Chang have been detained under Sosma and was charged with attempts to sabotage the country's economy."
He said that it was mystifying that those who had borrowed money leading to a substantial debt were not being blamed but it was being put on others, referring to the A-G's claims that Bank Negara had been reckless in accusing 1MDB.
"The 'fantastic' thing is that up till now, 1MDB has yet to face the PAC and the prime minister has yet to be questioned by the police or MACC. If these incidents are used as a benchmark of 1MDB, it can be counted as the nation's biggest crisis," the PAS leader said.
Last Thursday, Apandi announced the AGC's decision not to take further action against 1MDB with regards to making inaccurate disclosures to obtain permissions. He said the decision was made despite the central bank's appeal for a review, because there had been no additional evidence.
Bank Negara the following day revealed that it had revoked three permissions granted to 1MDB between 2009 and 2011 because of inaccurate disclosures.
Apandi's announcement last week drew criticism, with chief 1MDB critic Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad even accusing the A-G of now behaving like a judge.
Meanwhile, Tuan Ibrahim said PAS welcomed anyone who wanted to demand for the truth in the 1MDB issue to join the opposition, including groups that are pro Umno-Barisan Nasional.
"We stress that we welcome any NGO to be with the opposition to go against Umno in the 1MDB issue for the people's interests but PAS will never have any political cooperation with NGOs that play on racial sentiments," he said.
On Tuesday, PAS, which is not part of the new opposition pact Pakatan Harapan, announced its cooperation with Perkasa on issues related to Islamic and Malay interests.
This included the edict by the Malay rulers that investigations into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) be resolved quickly, and a call to release 1MDB critics Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer, Matthias Chang.
Both also wanted the government to be transparent over the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).
PAS quickly clarified that its cooperation on these three areas with Perkasa, which has made incendiary statements about race and religion in the past, was not a "formal" collaboration.
Today, Tuan Ibrahim said that PAS would be the main enemy of any NGO that attempts to incite race and religion matters as Islam was against it.
"PAS will be the first to stop that NGO which wants to destroy the harmony between races with extreme racial politics."
