With hikes as much as 100 percent in some instances, the rise in toll fares tomorrow is bound to burn a deeper hole in the pockets of commuters.

According to Works Ministry, the government has paid RM1.5 billion as compensation to highway concessionaires to delay the hike since 2008.

It argued the funds could be better used for development projects such as schools and hospitals, which could benefit more Malaysians.
