Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today pledged not to allow those who are in cahoots with local and foreign elements to destroy the country, following the arrest and charging of two individuals who had lodged reports in foreign countries over troubled 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
"Malaysia is peaceful, harmonious and our aim is to be a developed nation with Islam as its core.
"Do not allow this to be destroyed. Do not allow anyone to be in cahoots with internal and external parties to destroy what we have achieved so far," he said in his speech at the Ma'al Hijrah celebrations in Masjid Negara.
Najib said Malaysia was the light of the Islamic world and it was the duty of all Muslims to defend existing leaders.
"The light of hope for the Islamic world is Malaysia. This is what we should defend with all our strength."
Touching on today's Ma'al Hijrah celebrations, Najib said the migration from Mecca to Madinah saw a transformation that brought about a transition from a defensive to progressive culture.
"Progressive culture encourages knowledge evolution, help in human resource development, expand business network and harmonises economic development," he said.
He added that this also showed the importance of unity among Muslims which could bring success to a country.
"In other words, the story of hijrah showed efforts to inculcate unity is part of the sunnah," he said.
Najib is facing intense pressure as a result of RM2.6 billion deposited into his personal accounts by an unknown Middle Eastern donor, as well as various probes conducted on his brainchild, state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) due to alleged financial impropriety.
Umno branch leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his counsel Matthias Chang were charged on Monday with economic sabotage after the former lodged reports in several countries against 1MDB.
