Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has denied a rumour circulating that he and two other veteran Umno leaders would lodge separate police reports against 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) tomorrow.
The other two said to be lodging police reports are Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
A statement posted on Muhyiddin's Facebook page by the page administrator said: "The WhatsApp being spread around about a police report by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is FALSE."
According to the WhatsApp message, Muhyiddin was to lodge a police report against the debt-ridden state-owned investment firm at the Dang Wangi police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
Former prime minister, Dr Mahathir, meanwhile, was supposedly going to lodge his police report against 1MDB at the Putrajaya police headquarters, and Shafie with the Brickfields police.
All three, according to the WhatsApp message, were to do so simultaneously at 10am tomorrow, and then gather at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya to lodge another report at 2.30pm.
Shafie also denied any such plans, telling The Malaysian Insider through an aide, "Please ignore the message that is circulating as it is not true".
Both Muhyiddin and Shafie were dropped from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's cabinet in July, after they openly questioned his handling of alleged financial irregularities in 1MDB. They had also asked for answers over the RM2.6 billion transferred to Najib's personal accounts, which are now said to be a political donation from the Middle East.
Mahathir has previously said he had no plans to lodge any police report against Najib, who is also the finance minister and chairman of 1MDB's advisory board.
On Monday, Mahathir, Muhyiddin, Shafie and three other veteran Barisan Nasional leaders held a joint press conference to condemn Putrajaya's use of an anti-terrorism law on two 1MDB critics – former Umno man Datuk Khairuddin Abu Hassan and lawyer Matthias Chang.
Others at the press conference were Umno veteran and Gua Musang MP, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, former party secretary-general Tan Sri Sanusi Junid and former MCA president Tan Sri Ong Tee Keat.
They also spoke about ousting Najib through a no-confidence vote in Parliament, while Muhyiddin had talked about Umno's culture of fear that prevented members from speaking up about wrongdoing by leaders.
