In his Maal Hijrah address here today, Najib said Malaysia was a harmonious country with ambitions of becoming a developed, Islamic nation.
"We should not let this be ruined. We should not allow anyone to conspire with parties in or outside of the country to destroy what has been achieved," he said today during his speech at the National Mosque.
The Pekan MP added that Malaysia was viewed as the "ray of hope" by Islamic countries, and that it was important to defend Malaysia with “all the strength we have.”
"Unity is what we hope for, we must work towards achieving this. We have to put in effort because we are the ray of hope for the Islamic world," Najib said.
Najib also said that Malaysia has proven itself to be an Islamic country that is willing to help all, citing his offer to accept to 3,000 Syrian refugees.
Najib’s remarks come after former Umno leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and lawyer Matthias Chang were jointly charged with sabotaging the economy with the reports they lodged against 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) with authorities in France, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK and Switzerland.
Khairuddin was also detained on September 23 for 28 days under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012. Chang was detained later on October 8 under the same law.
Khairuddin had kicked off the international tour to solicit investigations on 1MDB following a series of reports by US-based business daily Wall Street Journal alleging dubious activities involving the state-owned firm.
