PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli will know on January 20 if he is cleared of the charge of intentionally provoking Umno members through a statement in an article last year.
Sessions Court judge Azwarnida Affandi said she would deliver the verdict after going through the submissions by the prosecution and defence.
Rafizi, 37, who is Pandan MP, was said to have intentionally insulted Umno members and incurring their wrath with the knowledge that it could disturb public peace through a statement in an article entitled “Will Rafizi quit if Selangor is not toppled”.
Lawyer Eric Paulsen, who appeared for Rafizi, today said the PKR lawmaker was entitled to an acquittal as the defence had created reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case.
He also said Rafizi did not have the intention to provoke Umno members when the interview was given to The Edge Financial Daily journalist Azril Annuar.
Paulsen added that Rafizi only criticised Umno and not specific members of the party during the interview.
Rafizi was charged in the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court on August 28 last year.
The charge, under the Penal Code, carries a maximum jail term of two years or fine, or both upon conviction.
He could be disqualified as an elected representative if the court imposed a fine of RM2,000 or a one-year jail term or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Azahari Harun today concluded in his submission that the prosecution had proven their case beyond reasonable doubt.
Rafizi is also facing a charge under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act for disclosing Public Bank customer profile documents, relating to NFCorp.
However, trial has yet to commence as Rafizi is challenging the constitutionality of the charge.
