VALETTA, Malta: A Malaysian has been elected as the new chairman of the Commonwealth Youth Council for the 2015 to 2017 term.
Kishva Ambigapathy, 25, an engineer by profession, and chairman of the Young Professionals Bureau, is the first Asian to hold the post.
Kishva, from Bayan Lepas, Penang, was elected to the post at the recent Commonwealth Youth Forum held in conjunction with the Commonwealth heads of government meeting.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi congratulated Kishva and said it was a proud moment for the country as a Malaysian youth leader was recognised at the international level.
“Mr Kishva Ambigapathy is a leader for the present and future, and the country needs to produce more youth leaders like him.” Zahid said in a statement.
“It is hoped he will be able to give positive contributions to the Commonwealth in general, and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting or CHOGM specifically. As the new Commonwealth Youth Council chairman, he has made the country proud and raised the image of the country on the international front,” said Zahid.
Zahid had a meeting with Kishva after a breakfast dialogue between Commonwealth heads and youth leaders.
Kishva said he was proud to lead the CYC, a group that comprised 1.2 billion youths in the Commonwealth.
