Half the state, from Kuching in the west to the town of Sibu in the central part of the state, was without electricity from 1.30pm today. At 4pm, power in some parts of Kuching still had not been restored.
The state power supply company, Sarawak Electricity Berhad, said supply was fully restored by 5pm.
SEB in a statement said the blackout was triggered by a trip on its Oya-Selangau 275kV transmission line.
It said the trip at 1.31pm caused the loss of electricity supply to Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Bintangor and parts of Sibu.
Restoration work commenced immediately and power supply was restored progressively with parts of Sibu being the first to come back online.
SEB said investigations into the root cause of the outage were still ongoing.
It also said the 500kV "backbone transmission project" which is expected to be complete by the middle of next year should "ensure better efficiency and future reliability of the system".
In 2013, the state experienced an eight-hour blackout reportedly triggered by a "drop in load" at the Bakun hydroelectric plant.
This led to a shutdown of all SEB's power stations in Sejingkat, just outside Kuching, Batang Ai, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.
The furore over the blackout led to SEB chief executive Datuk Torstein Dale Sjotveit personally apologising to Sarawakians, particularly the business community "for the inconvenience and discomfort they faced".
