Politician Datuk Khairuddin Abu Hasan (left) and lawyer Matthias Chang (white shirt) in court last month after facing charges under Sosma. – The Malaysian Insider pic, November 4, 2015.Putrajaya today refused to answer repeated questions in parliament about the arrests of former Batu Kawan Umno leader Datuk Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer Matthias Chang under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) recently.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi earlier in the afternoon refused to answer questions about the use of Sosma against the two government critics, saying that he was not a "legal expert" and that the question would be addressed by de facto law minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
But Nancy when she took the floor refused to touch on the issue while winding up points raised during the budget debate relating to her portfolio, and only spent 15 minutes answering questions.
Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong), who raised the matter in his budget debate and stood up to raise the issue with both ministers, branded the development "extremely disappointing".
"But you can't expect anything better from a BN government," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
Sosma, which was supposed to be used only for terrorists, provides for 28 days detention without trial.
