Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem today hit out at Putrajaya’s policy of not recognising the Chinese schools’ Unified Examinations Certificate (UEC), calling it stupid and senseless.
He said it made no sense not to recognise the UEC because it had led to a brain drain and exodus of talent to countries which recognised the qualification.
Sarawak endorsed the UEC in September.
“I don’t care what the federal government does but I think it’s stupid.
“I’m prepared to stand up for it,” he said in reference to education still being under federal purview although Adenan has made a move to reclaim it under the Malaysia Agreement.
He said Sarawak would lose a lot of talent to countries like Singapore and Taiwan with such a policy.
“Other countries would pinch them.
“What a waste. How could we deny these people the opportunities (in the country)?” he said at the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Integrity Day.
The UEC is a standardised examination taken by students in all 60 Chinese independent secondary schools in the country.
A number of international universities, including the prestigious Oxford University in the United Kingdom, recognised the qualification.
Putrajaya does not recognise the UEC on the ground it does not follow the national education curriculum.
On Sarawak’s move to reclaim autonomy over education and boost Sarawak folk’s proficiency in English by making it the medium of instruction in schools in the state, Adenan said English was no longer the language of “our former colonial masters” but an international language.
He said Malaysians should not shut themselves out from the rest of the world.
“You are not on the moon. You are in this world.”
He said placing an emphasis on English did not mean the state was putting down Bahasa Malaysia.
“We can have both.”
