IGP: Numerous reports filed on proselytisation of Muslims

The police have received numerous reports about attempts by Christian groups to proselytise Muslims, according to inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
Though he did not provide an exact figure, Khalid said the number of reports lodged nationwide was a cause for concern.
"We have reports filed by individuals and organisations. I don't have to tell you how sensitive and potentially explosive this issue is.
"The law is clear on this matter and we must abide by it," Khalid told Malaysiakini.
The issue became a focal point after a seminar held on the issue was held at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) campus in Malacca last weekend, titled 'Threat of the Christian proselytisation movement', and reported by the news media.
A Special Branch police officer was among those invited to deliver a talk at the seminar, which authorities claimed did not contain incitement against the Christians.
However, Christian groups protested when it was revealed that participants were told, among others, that undercover Christian preachers were sent to Malaysia to convert Muslims.
Yesterday, Khalid defended the presence of the Special Branch officer at the seminar, saying no law was broken.
Asked about the so-called undercover Christian preachers, the police chief said reports on this matter have also been lodged.
"You must understand, some of these foreign preachers have no understanding of Malaysian law and approach everyone, including Muslims.
"Then there are also locals who engage in such activities, regardless of what the law states. All these cause tension among Muslims," he added.
Khalid cited Article 11(4) of the Federal Constitution, which empowers the police to act in such circumstances.
The clause reads: "State law and in respect of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, federal law may control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam."
As for the seminar, Khalid said the speakers did not preach hatred for Christians or demonise the faith, but rather cautioned participants about conversion attempts in order to safeguard the Islamic faith.
"I am sure other religious groups also hold similar seminars to strengthen the faiths of their respective believers," he added. -Mkini
