Morais clan clash again over 'gov't pressure' to cremate body

Estranged brothers Richard and Charles Morais, on opposing sides of the earlier tussle over the body of their murdered brother, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kevin Morais, have clashed again.
This time it is over claims that at least one individual from the Attorney-General's Chambers was involved in coercing the family to cremate Kevin’s remains before an application for a second autopsy could be heard.
In an article posted on Sunday, whistleblower website Sarawak Report claimed that a representative of the attorney-general pestered the family members, via text messaging, to expedite the cremation of the deceased DPP's remains.
Sarawak Report said that when the simple overtures were rebuffed, threats and bribery were then attempted.
While one brother expressed outrage over what he said he had heard but could not confirm, the other rubbished the claim of government pressure as the work of publicity mongers.
In one corner is youngest brother, Richard, who claimed Kevin's remains from the morgue and sent it for cremation against the wishes of others in the family.
Speaking to Malaysiakini yesterday, Richard denied the allegations of coercion by the attorney-general's chambers as claimed by Sarawak Report.
'It is all lies!'
"It is all lies! It’s crazy. There was no pressure from the AG whatsoever."
He said his motive in claiming his brother's body from the morgue for a speedy cremation was purely altruistic.
"For 70 days my brother's body was there… I wanted to lay him to rest," Richard said.
This despite the ongoing proceedings then by other family members, including older borther Charles, to apply for a court order for a second post-mortem to clear what they claimed were inconsistencies in the initial post-mortem.
"It's over. The case is over and done with," said Richard (photo), urging that no more time should be wasted over an 'old issue' and he went on to accuse those resurrecting the matter of seeking 'cheap publicity'.
In the other corner, elder brother Charles when contacted admitted to knowing of about the alleged text messages, claiming to have even received some of them, but said the Sarawak Report expose was the first real confirmation of it.
Brother confirms texts
"Yeah," Charles said when asked if he received some of the texts, adding that he also heard about it from other family members.
"But I was not sure, so I did not say anything," he told Malaysiakini.
Charles also expressed his outrage at the matter, seeing the alleged coercion to cremate Kevin's body speedily as a sabotage of his efforts to get a second post-mortem conducted.
"Amazing how far they went, how the AG’s office conspired… what are they trying to hide?" he asked.
"I need to know why they did this to one of their own. Who is going to be a DPP after this, when all this has happened?"
Asked about Richard's denial of the allegations, he said, "…of course Richard would deny it", adding he believed his brother was in collusion with those seeking to stop the second post-mortem.
Charles also demanded action from the IGP as new allegations and questions continue to arise over the kidnap and murder of his brother as well as the events surrounding the tussle of over the late DPP's body.
'I'll sue the hell out of them!'
"I want to know what the IGP is going to do. Is he going to investigate or continue to skirt around the issue?" he asked.
He said that if the IGP does not take action, he would engage lawyers in Malaysian and in the United States "to sue the hell out of them".
Charles (photo) also challenged newly-minted Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali, who has rubbished as 'preposterous' Charles' statutory declaration that he was in possession of a thumb drive with explosive details of Kevin's alleged damaging investigation into powerful national leaders.
"I want the AG to explain to me in his own words what is preposterous now," Charles said.
Commenting further, Charles, who is currently in the US said,'lagi taruh, lagi busuk', which literally in English means that the longer they hide matters, the more powerful the stink.
Contacted by Malaysiakini, the officer attached to the Attorney-General's Chambers, who was named in the Sarawak Report article, would only reply: "No comment." -Mkini
