Police probe claim tycoons bankrolled Dr M's plot against PM

The police are probing an article which claimed several prominent business tycoons bankrolled an alleged plot to topple Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The article, published in Malaysia Today last week, said the corporate barons met with Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former finance minister Daim Zainuddin in London to discuss the matter.
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the article contained serious allegations against prominent individuals.
"We will look into it to determine how the author obtained such information.
"The allegations are not only damaging to the reputation of these VIPs but also contains serious accusations of sabotaging the government," he told Malaysiakini.
According to the article, the group, which met in London late last year, settled on a RM2 billion figure.
"RM600 million of which was shelled out in worldwide media coverage by a US-based lobbyist and Public Relations Group.
"It seems the remainder was used to grease the palms of some MPs, local media portals, bloggers, and other well-connected persons closely linked to Mahathir and Daim," it added.
The article also accused Mahathir and Daim of planning to "buy over" over a total of 40 MPs from Umno, MCA, MIC and DAP at an average price of RM10 million per person.
"It would be interesting to know if any of the projected 40 MPs were remunerated, and if so, how the money was channelled," read the article.
The article also accused Mahathir and Daim of blackmailing politicians and officials from several government agencies into the plot to topple the prime minister.
It also claimed Mahathir attacked the ringgit with a slingshot, where the former premier targetted things with an economic ring, such as 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion donation.
Mahathir has openly called on Najib to step down and accused him of numerous misdeeds, the latest being an attempt to "bribe" him.
Najib, who has denied any wrongdoing, claimed the allegations are part of a conspiracy to topple him.
Malaysiakini is withholding the names of the four tycoons mentioned in the article, which also mentioned former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and Sarawak Report editor Claire Rewcastle-Brown. -Mkini
