A pro-Barisan Nasional NGO is upset over Perak DAP chairperson Nga Kor Ming’s Facebook post which it claimed had insulted niqab-wearing Muslim women.
Pakatan NGO Pro BN president Zulkarnain Mahdar said the post was particularly insulting as it featured a ‘frightened’ emoji on top of an image of niqab wearers.
The emoji, he said, would give rise to all kinds of perceptions, one of them; that encountering niqab-wearing women would be a scary experience.
Emoji are smileys used in electronic messages and Web pages.
Nga (photo), in his Facebook post on Dec 13, had criticised Umno delegate Ahmad Darus who stated that the uniform of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) stewardesses was too revealing.
Below the picture of Ahmad was the accompanying picture of niqab-wearing women and the frightened-looking emoji with the words ‘Is this what stewardesses should wear?' in Chinese.
Branding it as simply unacceptable, this was the reason why Zulkarnain decided to send a memorandum to Nga at the DAP’s headquarters today.
“Nga is not sensitive with regard to the Muslim way of life," he said.
Zulkarnain also expressed disappointment with the DAP over the presence of police today.
“They can send memorandum but when we do it, they call the police.
“This is a democratic country, but look how many police officers there are?” he said, on the six or so police personnel who stationed themselves at the entrance of the DAP’s headquarters.
