Avoid bias in teaching Israel-Palestine conflict, educators told

PETALING JAYA: Educators must have a deep and unbiased understanding of the Israel-Palestine conflict to appropriately educate students on the matter, says prominent intellectual Chandra Muzaffar.

He said teachers should be focused on seeking the truth instead of getting caught up in subjective interpretations.

With children as young as eight seen participating in protests over the conflict, he said it is important to also consider their capacity to understand complex issues.

Chandra’s comments come amid controversy over the use of toy guns by schoolchildren attending a Palestine Solidarity Week in schools. The education ministry later issued guidelines stipulating that schools should refrain from showcasing a one-sided perspective of the conflict.

However, an MP from Perikatan Nasional, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, called for clarity about what would constitute a “balanced explanation”. He said the goal of the solidarity week was to show support for Palestine and “not both parties”.

Chandra said the Israel-Palestine conflict should not be framed exclusively through a religious lens, pointing out the difference between Zionism and Judaism as an example.

“Zionism is an ideological movement, distinct from Judaism, which is the religious faith of Jewish people. While Judaism is inclusive and does not endorse racism, Zionism, on the other hand, has elements of racism.

“It’s important to clarify these differences to people, as many might not fully grasp these distinctions.” Chandra said, adding that it was also important to nurture critical thinking in children.

“Education is key, and it’s crucial to convey to them that actions such as carrying guns or stepping on the flag of Israel are inappropriate behaviours.”

He said Karen Armstrong’s book “A History of Jerusalem, One City, Three Faiths” is a good reference for a truthful understanding of the history behind the conflict.

“The book highlights that throughout its history, Palestine has been a diverse region, home to multiple ethnic and religious communities, and not exclusively belonging to any single group.”

Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung defended the government’s guidelines and advocated that Malaysian children be given a “balanced perspective” on the matter.

“We cannot advocate for violent symbols like guns and expect peaceful outcomes. The ultimate goal is for them to experience peace and live with dignity,” said the PKR communications director. - FMT
