Bersatu suspends Kuala Kangsar MP for four years

The Bersatu disciplinary board committee has suspended Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid’s membership for four years.

In a statement today, party secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, said Iskandar’s membership suspension was effective yesterday (Nov 3).

Hamzah also said that Iskandar is suspended from his Kuala Kangsar division chief post as well as all positions held in the party.

This comes after Iskandar recently voiced support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s premiership, citing the rising cost of living in his constituency.

“The disciplinary board committee convened on Friday, Nov 3, to examine the report of breach of discipline and violation of the (party) constitution by Iskandar.

“After carefully examining all documentation evidence, the severity of the offence, the implications and impact on the party as well as an explanatory letter from Iskandar, the disciplinary board committee has found him guilty under Clause 22.1 (f) of the Bersatu constitution,” Hamzah said.

Shifting support

Iskandar was the first lawmaker from Perikatan Nasional’s Bersatu to declare his support for Anwar’s administration.

Hamzah had previously alleged that Iskandar was threatened with corruption charges, in return for voicing support for Anwar. He did not provide any proof to back the claim.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the agency is not involved in the matter, while Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said no police report has been lodged.

Meanwhile, on Oct 30, Bersatu's Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman followed in Iskandar’s footsteps, citing similar reasons as the latter.

On Thursday (Nov 2), Hamzah announced that Bersatu’s supreme council had appointed vice-president Radzi Jidin as the new Federal Territories Bersatu head and Labuan division chief, replacing Suhaili.

Suhaili today said he has accepted the party’s decision, asserting that he remains a Bersatu member despite the leadership changes.

The decision on the change in leadership was made pending the outcome of the party’s disciplinary proceedings against Suhaili for shifting his support to Anwar. - Mkini
