GPS retains Jepak with over 8,000 majority

Gabungan Parti Sarawak retained the Jepak seat in the by-election held today after its candidate Iskandar Turkee defeated two others with over 8,000 majority.

Having a total turnout of 48.7 percent, Iskandar polled 9,638 votes against Stevenson Joseph Sumbang from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (854 votes) and Chieng Lea Phing from Parti Aspirasi (431 votes).

Jepak, being one of four state seats under the Bintu Parliament, has a total of 22,804 registered voters.

It is a multi-ethnic constituency, with a majority (54 percent) of Malays/Melanau, but with a sizable Iban community (34 percent), a smaller Chinese community (six percent) and ‘other’ groups (five percent).

The by-election was called following the death of six-term assemblyman Talib Zulpilip, who was state minister for integrity and ombudsman on Sept 15.

Iskandar, a former director of the national anti-drugs agency, was making his electoral debut in the by-election.

In 2021, Talib had polled 6,277 votes for a majority of 4,243 votes over his rivals Raba’ah Tudin of Parti Sarawak Bersatu, Stevenson, and independent candidate Tuah Kazan. - Mkini
