Foreign Ministry urges all to abide by UN Security Council resolution on Gaza

Malaysia has urged all parties to abide by the latest United Nations Security Council’s Resolution which called for urgent and extended humanitarian pauses and corridors through the Gaza Strip to facilitate the provision of essential goods and services.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement noted the UNSC Resolution on Wednesday came more than a month since the ongoing massacre of Palestinians in Gaza started.

“Malaysia believes that Resolution 2712 (2023) provides a temporary measure to urgently facilitate access to humanitarian aid to those in need as well as the protection of innocent civilians, particularly children throughout the Gaza Strip.

“It is also an important first step that must be followed by concrete actions towards immediate cessation of hostilities, which is vital to stop further loss of lives and destruction of property,” the Foreign Ministry said.

“Malaysia urges all parties to abide by this Resolution, in line with Article 25 of the UN Charter,” it added.

The Palestinian death toll from Israeli’s relentless attacks in the Gaza Strip has climbed to over 11,000 people, mostly civilians and also children caught in bombings of hospitals and other public amenities.

Malaysia has repeatedly reaffirmed its stand in support of a free Palestine, including at recent gatherings of international leaders attended by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“Malaysia rejects the pretext of self-defence by Israel, the occupying power in the Palestinian Territory, to perpetrate genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes against innocent Palestinians.

“Israel’s aggression is neither proportionate nor lawful, and runs contrary to the principles of the UN Charter,” said the Foreign Ministry today.

“Malaysia strongly believes that the root cause of the Palestinian issues, the continued illegal occupation, must be addressed.

“Malaysia remains firm that the Palestinians deserve their own independent and sovereign state, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its Capital,” it further said.

According to the United Nations, the UNSC had adopted the resolution by a vote of 12 in favour to none against, with three abstentions - Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States. - Mkini
