Lack of understanding, infidelity main reasons for divorce in Malaysia

Most married couples who faced domestic conflicts were young and married for five to 10 years.

KOTA BHARU: Lack of understanding, infidelity and interference by in-laws are the main reasons for divorces among married couples aged 35 to 39 in the country.

National Population and Family Development Board chairman Rohani Abdul Karim said 56.2% of men said they had a divorce due to lack of spousal understanding, followed by infidelity (11.8%) and interference from in-laws (10%).

“Findings from women also indicate a lack of understanding as the main cause of divorce (38%), followed by infidelity (20.5%) and irresponsibility (15.2%).

“Then there’s interference from in-laws (6%), refusing a second wife (2.8%), financial problems (4.7%), and other causes, including abuse, infertility and being involved in crime (10.4%).”

Speaking after the Kelantan state-level National Family Month celebrations here today, Rohani said married couples who faced such domestic conflicts were young and married for five to 10 years.

“We provide counselling and advise them according to the problems they face.

“Our intention is to ensure they continue to love each other, preventing them from choosing separation or divorce,” she said. - FMT
