PUTRAJAYA: Leaders of Muslim countries are set to meet soon over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war which has killed more than 9,000 Palestinians, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“We have contacted leaders from the Arab world and Turkey, and even Iran, to hold discussions (on the conflict),” he said during the monthly assembly of the prime minister’s department here today.
He said further discussions on the meeting will be held with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “within a day or two”.
Anwar said he has proposed that the meeting also include leaders of non-Muslim countries including Brazil, Ireland, Russia and China, who have spoken on the human rights crisis in Gaza.
He said the silver lining of the crisis is that the Israel-Palestine conflict is being openly discussed in Western countries on an unprecedented scale.
Anwar also said strong Malaysia-Egypt ties have facilitated the delivery of aid to those in Gaza.
“I requested priority for humanitarian aid from Malaysia. They (Egypt) honoured their promise that (aid from) Malaysia would be prioritised (to pass through the border to Gaza),” he said.
The Rafah crossing to the Sinai peninsula in Egypt is the only exit from Gaza that is not controlled by Israel.
The first shipment of humanitarian aid from Malaysia left for Egypt last Friday. Israel has to date rejected demands for a ceasefire and is expected to intensify attacks on Hamas.
On Sunday, Gaza officials said more than 9,770 Palestinian civilians have been killed since Israel began bombarding the area on Oct 7. More than half of those killed included women and children. - FMT
