Mufti in spotlight over 'Hitler knew them better' post

Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin’s social media post referring to Adolf Hitler has drawn criticism.

“Adolf Hitler knew them better than us,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, in reference to the leader of Nazi Germany responsible for the genocide of some six million Jews.

Asri (above) also posted a video of a crying child frantically searching for someone among a row of corpses. The boy then finds the person he is looking for, kneels, and plants a kiss on the deceased’s face.

The Arabic caption in the video stated that the boy, identified as Khaleed Al-Naji, was the son of someone who died as a “martyr”.

It is believed the video was from the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict which has claimed thousands of lives.

Commenting on Asri’s post, former deputy minister Mohamed Hanipa Maidin said: “In my view, he was too simplistic in his comment.”

He told Malaysiakini that while the Palestinian issue transcended politics, race, or even religion, the mufti, however, “seems to frame the issue using the lens of religion only”.

Meanwhile, Hanipa said Malaysians, irrespective of their political affiliation, religion, or race, are not pro-Israel.

Similarly, the former deputy minister said those who expressed concern over the Palestine Solidarity Week in schools should not be perceived as supporting the Zionist regime.

Several users on X also criticised Asri, with one asking: “Outing yourself as a Nazi? Your antisemitism is repugnant and a disgrace.”

Another user said: “Your hatred for Jews is greater than your love for your fellow human beings.”

Malaysiakini has called and texted Asri for comment on the criticism but did not receive a response.

‘Special position’

Hanipa also said Palestine has a “special position” as far as Muslims are concerned when addressing a question on the more muted reaction to the crises in Yemen and Syria.

“You are right. Perhaps the Muslims’ reaction to conflicts in other places are not as great as their reactions towards a war in Palestine.

“Perhaps Palestine has a special position as far as Muslims are concerned. After all, many prophets were from Palestine. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is specifically mentioned in the Muslims’ holy book,” he added.

The recent conflict in the Middle East erupted on Oct 7 after Hamas launched an attack on Israel which left more than 1,000 civilians and soldiers dead. Some 200 were taken hostage as well.

The Gaza Health Ministry claimed the death toll from Israel’s offensive has reached 10,000. - Mkini
