Poverty eradication: Agencies get 3 months to enrol those left behind

Government agencies were given three months to identify needy families who have not been enrolled in poverty eradication programmes.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government is also considering giving monthly aid to help households that are unable to join income generation programmes due to reasons such as health or disabilities, so they can rise above the food poverty line.

He said all agencies and ministries have also been tasked to update their data to verify the number of hardcore poor families which receive aid and generate income above the food poverty line this year.

Anwar announced this in a statement on the outcome of today’s National Economic Action Council meeting.

The food poverty line refers to how much income is needed for a household to meet its daily caloric needs.

The food poverty line in Malaysia is at RM1,198 per month.

Poverty eradication through income generation has been a major policy for the Anwar administration.

One notable programme is the People’s Income Initiative (IPR) which seeks to help poor households generate more than RM2,000 per month through either food sales, agriculture, or service and maintenance work.

Meanwhile, the NEAC also agreed to take three measures to improve processes relating to development expenditure.

The first is to create a cross-ministry team to review existing processes and suggest improvements that can be approved in an integrated manner by the government.

Meanwhile, the government will have a decentralisation policy - paired with strict controls and governance - for agencies to implement projects.

At the same time, the government will also have a policy to centralise the implementation of information communication technology (ICT) projects.

This includes determining specifications and costs by the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu), in order to manage the cost of ICT projects as Putrajaya moves to become a digital government. - Mkini
