Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will pass on the leadership of the island republic to his deputy, Lawrence Wong, before the next general election.
Hsien Loong (above), son of Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew, said this at the People’s Action Party (PAP) Awards and Convention 2023.
“Wong and the 4G (fourth generation) team have served for many years. They have taken on greater responsibilities, and are preparing well to take over the helm.
"They earned their spurs during Covid-19 and are increasingly setting the national agenda. I have full confidence in Wong and his team. There is no reason to delay the political transition,” the 71-year-old prime minister said.
According to Reuters, Hsien Loong said that the transition was delayed due to the pandemic.
“But if all goes well, I will hand it over (the reigns) by PAP’s 70th birthday next year.”
PAP was founded on Nov 21, 1954, while the next general election is not due until 2025.
Wong was catapulted into the spotlight as co-head of the government's Covid-19 task force, imposing restrictions on movement, border curbs and contact tracing, earning him praise for helping contain infection and keeping deaths low.
"I am ready for my next assignment," said the 50-year-old in an earlier speech at the conference. - Mkini
