KOTA KINABALU: Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor today announced the appointment of Brenndon Keith Soh as state attorney-general, replacing Nor Asiah Yusof.

Bernama reported Hajiji as saying Soh’s appointment would take immediate effect and it would be for a period of three years.

“Asiah will assume Brenndon’s previous position as legal adviser to the chief minister,” he said in a statement.

Soh had previously held the post of state attorney-general, from July to November 2020.

Asiah had recently faced calls to step down over the appointment of a lawyer whose arguments contradicted the state government’s stance on its 40% revenue legal challenge.

Liberal Democratic Party president Chin Su Phin had criticised the appearance of lawyer Tengku Fuad Ahmad in the attorney-general’s appeal against a High Court decision to grant the Sabah Law Society leave to challenge the special grant to which Sabah is entitled.

Tengku Fuad had presented arguments that seemed to contradict the state government’s official stand on the 40% special grant under Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution.

“If Tengku Fuad was appointed by the state attorney-general, she should be held responsible and resign from her position,” Chin was quoted as saying.

Sabah deputy chief minister Jeffrey Kitingan then said the state Cabinet would discuss calls for Asiah to resign. - FMT
