An environmental group has urged Kedah state authorities to reassess quarry operations in Kampung Padang in Bandar Baharu.
Sahabat Alam Malaysia’s (SAM) call comes in response to growing concerns from residents about the quarry operation's impact on their community.
"The quarry operations have raised concerns among a large number of residents in the surrounding area as they face several problems.
"These include cracks in house walls, dusty roads and loud noise from stone-crushing machines allegedly operating until late night," SAM president Meenakshi Raman said in a statement today.
Meenakshi (above) further claimed that the presence of many trucks in the area has also become a significant safety concern.
This includes claims of trucks speeding and having little regard for other road users, particularly when in residential areas and near schools.
Despite numerous complaints to local authorities, Meenakshi claimed that the concerns were not adequately addressed.
"Representatives of Kampung Padang residents informed SAM that they have lodged complaints and objections to the Bandar Baharu Land and District Office, but no effective action has been taken.
"These complaints were also conveyed to SAM, and we have sent several letters to the relevant parties.
"Disappointingly, the Land and Mines Office and the Bandar Baharu Land and District Office have not provided any feedback regarding the questions we raised," she added.
Risking public safety
Among the questions raised include the quarry's change in status from a red earth quarry to a stone quarry.
The NGO also highlighted issues with another red earth quarry on Bukit 300 Kaki in Serdang, Kedah, which allegedly causes muddy floods in nearby settlements during heavy rains.
Meenakshi further stressed the need for authorities to take these issues seriously, warning of potential risks to public safety and environmental damage if left unaddressed.
"SAM urges the Kedah state government and other relevant authorities to take this matter seriously.
"If quarry operators are found to be violating established laws and regulations, appropriate action should be taken without compromise, including the suspension of permits as it endangers the safety and peace of the public," she said. - Mkini
