Chegubard freed after remand ended - lawyer

Political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, who was remanded over his disclosure of allegations of corruption involving an officer of the Royal Malaysian Navy, was released this afternoon.

His lawyer, Mohd Rafique Rashid Ali, confirmed the matter to Malaysiakini.

“Chegubard (Badrul) was released by IPD Putrajaya at 3pm today,” he said.

According to Rafique, the police investigated Badrul under Section 203A of the Penal Code, Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972, and Section 233 of the MCMC Act 1998.

On July 22, Badrul (above) posted a confidential document on Facebook that he claimed to have received on July 15.

The document, which was allegedly signed by Navy Commander Abdul Rahman Ayob, was addressed to Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, and the MACC.

It allegedly contained complaints about candidates “preferred by certain parties” to replace Abdul Rahman, who would be retiring soon.

Badrul claimed the document showed how the individual was involved in several corruption cases, including a deal worth RM45 million.

On July 24, Badrul claimed he received threats regarding the disclosure.

The Bersatu leader then said he submitted all relevant documents to Public Accounts Committee chairperson Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

On July 26, he said a group of police officers visited his home to ask him to appear at the Putrajaya police station.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said police were investigating how Badrul obtained the document. - Mkini
