MACC remands 2 more in probe into highway contracts

 

The two suspects were arrested between 9pm and midnight last night, after they went to the MACC headquarters to have their statements recorded.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remanded two more individuals, the chairman of a company and the director of another, to assist in its probe into alleged bribery involving highway contracts in the Klang Valley worth over RM1 billion.

The remand order against the men, who are in their 40s and 50s, was issued by magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin.

The chairman of the company, who is a “Datuk”, will be remanded until July 6 while the director of the company will be remanded until July 4.

MACC sources said the two suspects were arrested between 9pm and midnight last night, after they went to the anti-graft agency’s headquarters to have their statements recorded.

“They are suspected of giving bribes of over RM200,000 to statutory body officials in return for getting work on a highway construction project that was previously carried out by another company.

“They are also believed to have bribed officials at a highway concession company for the same purpose,” he told Bernama.

MACC investigation division senior director Hishamuddin Hashim, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said investigations are being carried out under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for offering bribes.

He also confirmed that the three suspects who were previously remanded in relation to the investigation had been released on bail yesterday after the remand period expired. They included the CEO of the highway concessionaire. - FMT
