PETALING JAYA: Gua Musang PAS has sought to allay any fears that the party’s machinery would “boycott” the campaign for the upcoming Nenggiri by-election after it was announced that Bersatu would be defending the state seat.

The divisional commissioner, Azman Ahmad, said its members, who make up 90% of Perikatan Nasional’s machinery in the constituency, will abide by the leadership’s decision.

Gua Musang PAS Youth had earlier this month proposed that a PAS candidate be chosen to represent PN in the by-election, based on the strength of the PAS machinery.

Azman told FMT: “We will abide by the party’s decision and work towards ensuring that the PN candidate will win. We won’t be boycotting the campaign even though it is not a PAS candidate who will be fielded.”

Earlier today, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed that the party would make way for Bersatu, its PN ally, to contest the by-election.

Tuan Ibrahim said PN adheres to the principle that the party which won the seat in the last election would be the ones defending it.

At the state elections in August last year, PN candidate Azizi Abu Naim of Bersatu won the seat with a slim 810-vote majority against Barisan Nasional’s Ab Aziz Yusof.

The seat was declared vacant last month by the Kelantan state assembly speaker based on a notice from Bersatu that Azizi had ceased to be a member of the party.

Azman said the division’s decision to submit three names to the state leadership to be considered as candidates was merely a proposal.

“The final decision lies with the leadership and it was procedural. So any concern that we wanted to sabotage (Bersatu) should not arise.”

He hopes that PN will field a local, one who is known to many.

The by-election will be held on Aug 17. BN says it will field a candidate from the coalition to represent the unity government. - FMT
