Bukit Aman CID director M Kumar said police recorded statements from 93 witnesses, comprising members of the public, the Umno general assembly’s organisers and delegates, as well as Noorazli Said himself.

Police are investigating Sepang Umno chief Noorazli Said over the lewd “joke” he made at the Umno general assembly and will refer the investigation paper to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) tomorrow.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) director M Kumar said the case was investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code for uttering words with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

“So far, 86 police reports have been received, and statements have been recorded from 93 witnesses, comprising members of the public, the Umno general assembly’s organisers and delegates, as well as the suspect himself.

“The investigation paper will be referred to the AGC for further directions and advice,” he said in a statement today.

At the Umno general assembly last Saturday, Noorazli made a “joke” that revolved around a priest and a nun and hinged on a punchline erroneously attributed to Psalm 129 in the Bible.

The “joke” prompted Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak and Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau, among others, to demand that he apologise.

Police reports were lodged over Noorazli’s remarks, including by the Catholic Lawyers’ Society of Kuala Lumpur.

Noorazli apologised on Monday. However, national unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang later urged the authorities to investigate his remarks, saying religious institutions, clergy, sacred scriptures and beliefs should not be used as material for sexually themed jokes, regardless of the speaker’s intention. - FMT
