DAP often acts as a ‘moral judge’ when it involves its political rivals, but loses its voice when it involves one of its own, said Bersatu Youth chief Harris Idaham Rashid.

Bersatu Youth has slammed DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo for questioning the attorney-general’s (AG) decision to discontinue four graft charges against former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Bersatu Youth information chief Harris Idaham Rashid said Gobind’s statement reeked of hypocrisy as former DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng was also acquitted in his bungalow case in 2018 after the AG decided to drop the charges.

“Did Gobind also demand an explanation from the AG then?

“Why didn’t he also speak up for ‘public interest’ when the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) itself said it was ‘very surprised’ by the discontinuation of Lim’s charges?

“DAP often acts as a ‘moral judge’ when it involves its political rivals, but loses its voice when it involves one of its own. That is an insult to our judicial system,” he said in a statement.

Yesterday, the High Court acquitted Muhyiddin of four charges involving Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd after the prosecution applied for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) without giving a specific reason.

Muhyiddin’s lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, pointed out that no evidence or witness statement was served on the defence in relation to the four charges in seeking an acquittal.

The Bersatu president still faces three other abuse of power charges linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

Gobind urged the AG to explain the decision in detail, saying transparency was essential as the trial was of significant public interest and nearing its conclusion.

In a statement later, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said proceeding with the four charges against the former prime minister could have jeopardised its strategy and evidentiary case for the other charges he still faces.

In 2018, the AG dropped Lim’s corruption charges over the purchase of a bungalow allegedly below market price after receiving representations from the then finance minister.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers later said it decided to drop Lim and businesswoman Phang Li Koon’s case in light of new evidence and knowing that the charges would not succeed. - FMT
