KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has taken enforcement action against 602 public housing (PA) and People's Housing Programme (PPR) units for breaches of tenancy conditions, with 323 units vacated.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the enforcement operations were carried out between January and Sept 23.
"Of the 602 units subjected to enforcement action, 323 have been successfully vacated, with 193 units offered to eligible applicants.
"A further 130 units are in the process of being offered to 234 applicants awaiting housing offers in stages," she said in a written parliamentary reply to Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) on Wednesday (Nov 4).
Yeoh said the action targeted tenants with substantial rental arrears, those who breached tenancy conditions, and individuals who no longer met the eligibility requirements.
"Appropriate action is taken based on existing tenancy regulations and conditions, including the termination of tenancies and eviction where applicable," she said.
She said DBKL manages and supervises 32,127 rental units under the PA and PPR schemes.
"Between 2024 and this year, it received 4,395 applications, while 4,444 applications, comprising new applications and appeals, were referred to the Public Housing Allocation Committee for consideration.
"These statistics show that the number of vacant PA and PPR units available remains limited," she added.
In 2024, there were 1,160 eligible applicants, followed by 687 last year and 427 this year.
Of this year's eligible applicants, 193 have received housing offers, while 234 others are waiting for offers.
Yeoh said DBKL is also reviewing and updating its application database to ensure units are allocated to eligible households.
"DBKL has no plans to provide additional PA or PPR units to meet the overall demand.
"Therefore, efforts to address the waiting list will focus on optimising existing units, including managing vacancies, reviewing tenant eligibility, enforcing tenancy conditions and reallocating units to eligible applicants," she said.
She added that applicants who could afford alternatives were encouraged to consider affordable housing schemes, including Residensi Wilayah and Residensi Madani.
"These measures will help ensure that PA and PPR housing continues to prioritise lower-income groups, while applicants with greater financial means can access alternative affordable housing through the Madani housing schemes," she said.
Shahidan had asked about measures to address the public housing waiting list in Kuala Lumpur, the additional units required and the government's targets for reducing the number over the next three years. - Star
