Floods predicted in parts of Kelantan, Terengganu from Nov 8 to 11

KUANTAN: The National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (PRABN) of the Irrigation and Drainage Department predicts that Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin are likely to be hit by floods, especially in hotspot areas, low-lying regions, and at-risk locations from Sunday (Nov 8) until Wednesday.

It said the forecast followed an alert-level continuous rain warning by the Meteorological Department at 4.30pm on Sunday.

Among the locations predicted to be involved in Kuantan are areas within the Sungai Kuantan Basin, namely the Sungai Kuantan, Sungai Lembing, Sungai Kenau, Sungai Beserah, Sungai Belat and Sungai Soi.

"Also involved are the Sungai Cherating Basin (Sungai Cherating), Sungai Pahang Basin (Sungai Lepar), and Sungai Penor Basin (Sungai Penor)," said the statement.

For the Pekan district, the areas involved are the Sungai Bebar Basin (Sungai Bebar), Sungai Miang Basin (Sungai Miang), Sungai Pahang Basin (Sungai Pahang, Sungai Pahang Tua and Sungai Mentiga), while the Sungai Mercung Basin (Sungai Mercung) is also included.

In addition, in Rompin, it will involve areas in the Sungai Endau Basin (Sungai Endau and Sungai Anak Endau), Sungai Rompin Basin (Sungai Rompin, Sungai Pukin, Sungai Kepasing, Sungai Keratong, Sungai Jeram, Sungai Gayong, Sungai Chanis, Sungai Buan) as well as the Sungai Pontian Pahang Basin (Sungai Pontian Pahang).

"The predicted floods may occur earlier or later than expected. This warning is issued to enable all residents, especially in flood-prone areas, to be vigilant and comply with the instructions of the authorities or flood disaster management agencies," according to the statement.

Meanwhile, floods are also expected in nine Kelantan districts in the same period, following a continuous rain warning issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The districts are Kota Baru, Tumpat, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai and Jeli, according to the centre.

It said the preliminary flood forecast followed the same Continuous Rain Warning (Alert) by MetMalaysia on Sunday, with flood hotspots, low-lying areas and other flood-prone locations expected to be affected.

"In Kota Baru, areas at risk are located within the Kelantan River Basin, while in Tumpat, they are within the Golok River Basin, covering Sungai Golok, Sungai Pengkalan Nangka, Sungai Mentua and Sungai Kelaboran," it said.

In Bachok, areas at risk are within the Kemasin River Basin, including Sungai Jelawat, Sungai Kemasin, Saliran PKS, Saliran KADA drainage and Sungai Bator.

The Semerak River Basin, covering Sungai Lubuk Nibong, Sungai Melor, Sungai Gunong and Sungai Semerak, is also at risk of flooding.

In Machang, areas at risk are within the Kelantan River Basin, including Sungai Kelantan, Sungai Kerawang, Sungai Kweng Hitam and watercourses in Machang town.

In Pasir Mas, flooding is forecast in the Golok River Basin, including Sungai Golok and Sungai Lemal, while in Pasir Puteh, the areas at risk are within the Semerak River Basin.

Areas at risk in Tanah Merah are within the Kelantan River Basin; Sungai Lebir and Sungai Galas, both part of the same basin in Kuala Krai; Sungai Pergau and Sungai Jeli in the Kelantan River Basin, as well as Sungai Lanas in the Golok River Basin in Jeli.

The centre warned that flooding could occur earlier or later than the forecast period.

Residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, are advised to remain vigilant and comply with instructions from the authorities.
