CAIRO, Feb 4 — The efforts made to evacuate Malaysians from Egypt using aircraft from the Malaysian Armed Forces, AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) reflect the government’s concern for its citizens.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said it was in line with the 1 Malaysia slogan “People First, Performance Now”.
“Today is another proof which shows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s concern for the people and always putting the people’s interests ahead.
“My group together with the 1 Malaysia Putera Club and other agencies are here to bring back our students and citizens home safely.
“To parents and citizens at home, pray for our safety,” Jamil (picture) told reporters here.
He also advised parents to liaise with Wisma Putra and the relevant agencies to obtain the latest information on the developments in Egypt instead of listening to unverified reports.
Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay expected the mission to evacuate Malaysians from Egypt to be completed by Sunday, saying that three Royal Malaysian Air Force C-130 aircraft and a ship would be used tomorrow to evacuate the students to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
“After that, we will think of a way to bring them back to Malaysia or take them back to Egypt again,” he added.
1 Malaysia Putera Club president Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said the club members were in Egypt on the directive of the prime minister to assist in the evacuation of Malaysian students.
He said the club would look into the needs of the affected students before they were taken out of the country to Jeddah.
“We are monitoring the situation here. A MAS aircraft has left home with almost 345 students and soon Airasia will take off with about 300 students.” — Bernama
