Tee Keat: Gag on Soi Lek’s ‘immoral’ acts illogical

February 05, 2011

Ong has accused Dr Chua’s supporters of whitewashing the latter’s reputation as a means of damage control.
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 – Former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat hit out at Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s supporters within the party, accusing them today of wanting to erase his successor’s “immoral” acts by not discussing them.

Ong said it was “illogical” for MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, vice president Datuk Donald Lim and Perak executive councillor Datuk Mah Hang Soon to turn Dr Chua’s extramarital affair and resignation U-turn into a “party secret” in a misguided attempt to protect the party.

“Do they expect every MCA member, if not the public, to emulate an ostrich burying its head in the sand or simply to delete the scandal from our public memory?” Ong said in a statement today.

The Pandan MP renewed his attacks on Dr Chua on Wednesday – the first time since losing his presidency during last year’s party elections – calling the former Labis MP a leader who has failed to keep his promises.

Dr Chua’s offer to quit the posts he held in the party and government was merely a trick to gain public support and sympathy as means of damage control over his sex scandal, he had claimed.

Ong today also chided Kong for stating that the outcome of the last party election must be respected, reasoning that it was “inappropriate” to discuss incidents which happened prior to the divisive March polls.

“Do they imply that the March 28, 2010 MCA poll that returned Chua as the new president has the power of ‘political bleaching’ any blot in his past alleged immorality record retrospectively?”

Ong added that Kong, Lim and Mah’s energies would be better spent convincing Malaysians that “personal immorality” was permissible in political leaders rather than trying to keep him silent.

“This would appear more convincing and productive as compared to mere gagging and censuring me, if not banishing me from the battered party,” he said.
