(The Star) - The Home Ministry has taken steps to convince shopping complex owners to allow Rela members who are appointed as Auxiliary Police (AP) to patrol their carparks.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein wants shopping complex owners to allow Rela members who are appointed auxiliary police to patrol their car parks.
He said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar would lead a team of senior officers in talks with the owners next week to discuss the initiative and how it should be implemented.
“Because car parks are private property, it is important that the owners work closely with us. We are engaging them to exchange views and explain the whole idea,” he said yesterday.
Hishammuddin hoped the owners would be receptive to the initiative “which is part of our crime-fighting effort”.
“We are very concerned with the recent cases of snatch thefts at (shopping complex) car parks, but it is impossible to position policemen at every location in the country,” he said.
As of March, there were 5,737 Rela and Civil Defence Department members registered as auxiliary police under the Police Omnipresence Programme.
