Hanif panel to meet foreign experts over riot procedures



PUTRAJAYA, July 30 — A roundtable meeting with foreign security experts from four countries will be held to seek their views and recommendations on the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the police in handling street assemblies and demonstrations.
Chairman of the independent panel probing the Bersih 3.0 violence, Tun Hanif Omar, said today the panel met the representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Pakistan to discuss the matter as these countries were involved in handling protests and demonstrations in recent times.
He said the roundtable discussion between the foreign security experts and their local counterparts was expected to be held within a month.
“They can share their experience and discuss the laws, philosophy, methods, formation and equipment and force that they use to control crowds and handle peaceful demonstrations, protection of the media and the practitioners’ SOP with our local experts and practitioners to benefit our society.
“The panel will make recommendations as what would be a more appropriate SOP for the police in this country. It is part of our terms and reference,” he told reporters, here, today.
Earlier, Hanif chaired a meeting of the panel, which is investigating the allegations and concerns raised following the Bersih 3.0 rally at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur on April 28.
Members of the panel present today were Tan Sri Nik Hashim Nik Ab Rahman, Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacob, Prof Dr Rozmi Ismail and Liew Peng Chuen.
The panel spent about five hours listening to the testimony of 10 witnesses including representatives from Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad, group director of Rail Khairani Mohamed and group director of the Bus Division Zohari Sulaiman, Al Hijrah cameraman Mohd Azri Mohd Salleh and Makkal Osai photographer P.
