BN SUPPORT FOR CHINESE SCHOOLS

DEPUTY Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Education Minister, said the BN government would continue to assist the national-type Chinese schools to meet the need of the Chinese community.

Speaking at the opening of the 14th World Chinese Book Fair at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre, Muhyiddin assured the Chinese community that the Barisan Nasional government would continue to support the Chinese schools.

Muhyiddin said that the government has always strived to raise the education quality of all schools, irrespective of the type of school.

"Let us not jeopardise the future of our children for the sake of short-term political gain," he said.

"At the same time, let us not forget the role of education as a means to unite Malaysians of all races. Let us make all schools in this country as unity schools, where children of all races can mingle freely, learn to accept differences and respect each other," he added.

Muhyiddin also praised the wisdom of the past and present leaders for not only preserving Chinese education in the country but also integrating it with the national education system.

According to statistics provided by the Ministry of Education, in Sabah there are 83 Chinese schools with a total of 35,706 students while there are 591,121 students enrolled in 1,294 Chinese schools in the whole of Malaysia. (Insight Sabah)
