GE win not final goal for PAS
KOTA BARU- Capturing control of Putrajaya after the upcoming 13th General Elections is not the "ultimate victory" for PAS as the party must prove its ability to uphold Islamic principles and governance as part of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali said these principles are contained in the party's "Negara Berkebajikan" proposal which was first introduced during its last muktamar (general assembly) and updated for this year's session held at Pusat Tarbiah Islam Kelantan (Putik) here.
"We are now in a race towards the finish line … PAS and PR component parties must increase our readiness to face elections, but also, to do it with caution and avoid resorting to political insanity," said Mustafa in his opening address at the muktamar's launch this morning.
Mustafa also urged the 1,100 delegates, comprising its various wings - Dewan Ulama (clerics), Dewan Pemuda (youths) and Dewan Muslimat (women) - to offer "constructive criticism" for the party during their debate of the theme "Negara Berkebajikan Teras Perpaduan" (Welfare state foundation of unity).
He said this is necessary as there is not much time left before Parliament must be dissolved to make way for a general election to be called, expected to be the "fiercest battle" for power yet.
Meanwhile, assembly chairman Abu Kasim Abdullah also earlier welcomed invited guests from not only PKR and DAP as PR component parties, but also Islamic-parties representatives from conflict-stricken nations.
Among others, present were representatives from Palestine's Hamas and Syria's Ikhwan Muslim Brotherhood - two Muslim nations whose citizens are in the midst of a humanitarian crisis.
This year's muktamar also saw participation from members of Dewan Himpunan Penyokong PAS, comprising its non-Muslim supporters, as well as a string of local celebrities who lent their support to the party.
The assembly will continue at 3pm today to debate on the presidential address delivered by party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
