Palanivel defends Batu Caves open house move
MIC president G Palanivel has defended the party's move to hold its Deepavali open house at the Batu Caves temple, saying that it is purely a joyful occasion for all Indians and visitors to celebrate.
He also rapped the opposition for politicising the issue to gain political mileage.
“Everyone is invited to the open house. Not only MIC people or the Indian community will attend it but also people from all walks of life including tourists,” he told reporters after presenting aid to 400 needy families from Petaling Jaya Selatan today.
Palanivel, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, was commenting on an article carried by a news portal criticising the party over the Deepavali celebration plans at Batu Caves.
He noted that it was MIC’s tradition to hold open house celebrations for many years, and even last year, it was held in the vicinity of the temple and was attended by more than 10,000 people.
On the MIC candidates’ list for the next general election, Palanivel stressed that he wanted to pick the best and suitable candidates for the polls.
“We’re not going to bring any outsiders to contest in MIC’s traditional areas. If an outsider is chosen, we will reject it.
“The candidate must be from MIC, must have experience in the party, known to the party, who is popular and holds a position in the party. Candidates with these criteria will be chosen to contest the election,” he added.
