AMPANG (Jan 10, 2013): A councillor with the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council has alleged that the landslide that occurred in Taman Mega Jaya, Ampang, on Wednesday was caused by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd's (Syabas) failure to maintain a water pumphouse in the area.
MPAJ Zon 23 councillor Mohamad Samat said water has been leaking from Taman Mega Jaya pumphouse for the past five years and it flows through the hill slope and into the drain. He said on Jan 6, the leakage resulted in a huge hole on the hilltop where the pumphouse is located.
"The soil erosion caused by the water leakage is the result of Syabas' failure to maintain the pumphouse. It created an unnecessary risk of landslide to nearby residents despite their continuous complaints to the company regarding the state of the hill slope," he said today.
MPAJ engineer Zafrul Fazry confirmed that the small landslide was caused by water erosion due to the leakage from the pumphouse. He said MPAJ will give Syabas a 14-day notice to respond to the complaints.
"The matter should be taken care of immediately by Syabas as the leaks will cause an even bigger landslide and endanger the residents," he said.
This is not the first time Syabas is blamed for poor maintainence of their assets. On Wednesday, Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said an investigation revealed that a water pumphouse in Wangsa Maju was poorly maintained, causing prolonged water disruption in Gombak and Kuala Lumpur.
Selangor has demanded that it be allowed to take over water operations from Syabas to resolve the current water crisis in the Klang Valley and avert such problems in the future.
