The documentary, made available for free, will detail the Selangor political aide's death and the impact on his family.
PETALING JAYA: A documentary about the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock will be released online today for free.
The 28-minute documentary titled “The Rights of the Dead” was directed by Selangor state government’s research officer Tricia Yeoh.
“The documentary is one of the three documentaries that won the Justin Louis Human Rights Award last year,” said Freedom Film Festival in a statement.
The documentary revolves around Teoh’s tragic demise and the impact on his family. It also deals with issues such as death in custody and how a government should be responsible in dispensing justice for its citizens.
“In a democracy, people have the right to expect all institutions to be independent, working fairly to protect its citizens in time of need,” read the statement
Commenting on the matter, Yeoh referred to the documentary as a personal journey, as it involves her former colleague in the state government and how the system failed the people.
“It is my personal hope that by making the documentary available online, Malaysians will use the opportunity to watch and spread the word to their friends and relatives, so that the story of Teoh’s death will never be forgotten,” she said.
In July 2009, Teoh was found dead at Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, which used to house the Selangor MACC chapter.
He was taken in for questioning a day earlier by the anti-graft body to assist in an alleged corruption case involving a Selangor state exco.
A Royal Commission of Inquiry was established to probe the death and it was found that Teoh had committed suicide due to the aggressive nature of interrogation by three MACC officers.
Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail had refused to charge the officers in court saying only MACC could punish them for breaching its protocol in handling a witness.
The film would be available for viewing on http://freedomfilmfest.komas.org/, komasvideos on YouTube, or malaysiakini.tv, beginning from 8pm later.
