Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but this close relationship could prove fatal to her reputation, as is the case with Rosmah Mansor, the wife of the prime minister.
The year 2013 had hardly got rolling when she was already linked to yet another scandal linked to her alleged obsession with this feminine luxury.
The latest allegation has been detailed today by PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli, who said he had scrutinised several documents related to businessman Deepak Jaikishan, who has made startling allegations of Rosmah and her husband Najib Razak's involvement in the murder sage of Mongolian citizen Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Following the outcry by the recent decision of the Defence ministry's Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) to buy Deepak's company AstaCanggih Sdn Bhd, there were calls by Pakatan Rakyat leaders to investigate Deepak's claim that he had been 'forced' to sell his company.
The deal has been slammed as bribery to silence all parties following Deepak's decision to come clean on his friendship with Najib's family, and how he had been tasked to get private investigator P Balasubramaniam to retract a damning statutory declaration he made in 2006 about Najib's affair with Altantuya.
Critics have also accused Defence minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of abusing powers by compelling LTAT to enter a deal which made no business sense.
Diamonds, diamonds
The documents acquired by Rafizi shows funds transfer from Deepak's Carpet Raya Sdn Bhd and Carpet Plus Sdn Bhd to several luxury jewelers in Hong Kong, being what Deepak had claimed were his purchase of jewellery for Rosmah.
Among others, an email from luxury jeweler Dehres Ltd shows a file attachment of a Microsoft Excel file bearing the name "Datin Mansor Rosmah ($115,000) Feb 12 08". The file shows an invoice made to Carpet Raya for the purchase of "one lot of polished diamonds" at a price of US$115,000 (RM408,250).
Rafizi also showed a Maybank payment slip showing the transfer of the amount from Carpet Raya to Dehres.
Another set of documents contains invoices from Firestone Co Ltd, showing the purchase of several diamond jewelleries worth some RM5.3 million, which was paid in April 2009. Rafizi said checks with the company as well as with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council proved that the invoices were not fake.
As such, Rafizi said Deepak's claim that he spent a whopping RM13 million within three months on jewellery for Rosmah should be treated by the authorities as a "serious allegation, what more when Deepak has documented proofs".
Rafizi said a report will be lodged in the coming week seeking a probe based on the latest evidences.
