2,433 nabbed in crackdown on illegal immigrants
The Immigration Department arrested 2,433 illegal immigrants under the Ops 6P Integrated Programme crackdown on illegal immigrants throughout the country last night.
The Star reported that they were among 8,105 illegal immigrants investigated by the authorities.
The arrest were made in Putrajaya, Seremban, Kampar, Malacca, Johor Baru, Kuantan and Kuching in a one-night operation.
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that Indonesians topped the list with 717 people, followed by Myanmar (555), Bangladesh (387) and Nepal (229).
“The rest also included citizens of Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Philippines, China, Nigeria and Thailand,” he was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia reported Immigration Department deputy director of enforcement K Saravanan as saying that the migrants either did not possess any identification documents, had overstayed their visas and or were suspected of using false visit passes.
The operation involved the Immigration Department, Royal Malaysian Police, Malaysian Armed Forces, the People’s Volunteer Corps, National Registration Department and the Malaysian Civil Defence Department.
The Ops 6P Integrated Programme will be carried out through several phases until Dec 31.
