500,000 in Sabah and Labuan face power disruptions
More than 500,000 consumers in Sabah and Labuan will be affected by power disruptions while restoration work is carried out on three independent power producer (IPP) stations in Sepanggar.
Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) managing director Abdul Razak Sallim said two minor explosions occurred at the Teluk Salut and Rugading IPPs at about 8am followed by a fire at the Melawa IPP at 12.38pm yesterday.
“Because of the incidents, SESB will have to carry out staggered power rationing for about one month, up to three hours on working days,” he told a media conference in Kota Kinabalu.
He said there would be no power rationing on Sunday as electricity consumption would not be as heavy.
According to him, the Teluk Salut and Rugading IPPs owned by Ranhill Power Sdn Bhd were expected to resume operations within 24 to 26 hours.
“The ARL Melawa IPP owned by ARL Power Sdn Bhd will take up to one month to restore,” he said, adding the incidents were being investigated by the respective IPPs.
Meanwhile, he advised consumers to contact the SESB hotline at 15454 or 088-515000 should they experience power disruptions exceeding three hours in their area.
