Environs groups hold protest at Parliament
Two environmental NGO groups today held a demonstration at the Parliament main gate, to protest against the government allowing the Lynas rare earth plant to continue to operate despite its alleged non-compliance with the conditions of its temporary operating licence.
The group of 60, comprising activists from Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas (SMSL) and the Damn the Dams Action Group, had gathered at the entrance to the Parliament building.
The group also demanded that the Sarawak government cancel all dam projects in the state.
The anti-dam group first appeared at the scene at around 10am, and were later joined by the anti-Lynas group which had started their march from Padang Merbok.
The group shouted slogans and held up placards which demanded that the Lynas plant be closed, and the dam projects in Sarawak be cancelled.
“Stop Baram Dam, stop Murum Dam, damn the dams,” they shouted.
“Taib Mahmud, step down, destroy Taib Mahmud,” shouted the protesters, referring to the Sarawak chief minister.
“Stop Lynas, Lynas get out,” they also shouted.
