GEORGE TOWN : A durian seller operating a stall just opposite Menara Umno on Jalan Macalister, watched in horror as the lightning arrestor fell from the building and hitting a car passing by on the road in June.
Khor Hun Hin, 56, in relating his account on the incident in the inquest to ascertain Lim Chin Aik's death today, said that on June 13, he "saw with my own eyes a metal from Menara Umno falling vertically and hitting the front windscreen of a gray car and pulling it down into the ground".
Earlier, Khor said he had been attending to a customer on a motorcycle when the wind began blowing strongly, shocking his customer, who left without buying the durian.
"After that, as the wind continued to blow strongly, the huge concrete slab from on top the building collapsed, along with the debris.
"The debris fell on my stall, creating a hole in the blue tarpaulin above my stall, as well as damaging my van," he said, adding that he sustained injuries to his hand and neck, and fell face down.
Khor said his friend, Ah Teong, then gestured to him to look up, and he saw a piece of metal swaying high up.
Khor, whose stall is located near Jalan Selangor, some 12 meters away from the site, said he told a police officer about the incident 15 to 20 minutes later, but noted that the officer "ignored me and just left".
