Malay rights group Perkasa has urged the government to reduce the salaries of top civil servants by five to 10 percent and instead use that money to help ease the burden of the people.
Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali was quoted by broadsheet Utusan Malaysia as saying that ministers, government-linked company (GLC) chiefs, and top ministry officials should have their salaries reduced.
“This decision must be considered because the people have voiced out, especially after the increase in oil prices. It makes the people restless,” he was quoted as saying during a press conference recently.
He also urged the government’s Performance Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu) to be closed down because the existence of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) was already enough to drive the country to a high-income status.
He said the people would also receive more incentives from the government if Pemandu were closed.
“If the government needs experts to replace Pemandu, they could get the services of professors and professionals from local universities,” he was quoted as saying.
