Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim today announced that residents of Selangor will continue to receive 20 cubic metres of free water monthly for at least three to five years.
Speaking at a function at the Kajang stadium last night, Khalid said that this was assured after Selangor signed a MOU with Putrajaya on the state's plans to takeover water assets.
He added that Selangor residents will also be given access to shares of the state's water assets because all Selangor residents are entitled to a slice of the state's revenue.
"Alhamdullillah, 20 cubic metres of free water will continue to be given to each household for at least three to five years.
"And we promise, that once (the water asset restructuring works) are done, we will introduce a new concept in ownership of state assets.
"We will give shares for water assets to all people of Selangor," he said.
Khalid also thanked the people of Selangor for their support and hoped that with the MOU, the state will not face a water crisis.
"I thank you for your prayers," he said.
On Feb 26, Khalid signed the MOU with Putrajaya which would pave way for the state's RM9.65 billion bid to take over four private companies involved in Selangor's water industry.
Khalid has long fought to take reigns of the companies, which were the result of the Mahathir-era privatisation drive, on grounds that the management needed to be improved and that the increase in water tariffs stipulated in the contracts were unreasonable.
