Teacher Shalwati Norshal was sentenced to one year and two months prison for gross violation of the integrity of their daughter and eldest son, as well as assault of their two younger sons, The Star reported today.
Azizul Raheem Awalluddin, who is in Sweden as a Tourism Malaysia director, was sentenced to 10 months prison as he was convicted of gross violation of the integrity of his eldest son and the assault of his daughter and second oldest son.
He was acquitted of any offences against his youngest son.
Azizul and Shalwati were detained on December 18 last year after their eldest son Ammar, 12, told staff at his school that he had been hit, which led to a report on the matter to the authorities.
On February 10, Shalwati and Azizul were charged with multiple counts of gross violation of a child’s integrity by hitting and abusing their children. They had faced a possible maximum sentence of six years in prison.
Ammar later testified, via a pre-recorded interview shown in court, that his older sister Aishah was also beaten on several occasions for stealing money and chocolates.
The alleged offences took place in the family’s home in Spanga, a Stockholm suburb, between September 15, 2010 and December 17 last year.
The children, Aishah, 14, Ammar, Adam, 11, and Arif, 7, returned to Malaysia on February 1 and were placed under the custody of their aunt. They also met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Datin Seri Rosmah later the same day.
